Ahead of this year’s National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), we’ll be taking a closer look at the artists and performers announced in each category. Up next are the “Outstanding First Creative Published Book” nominees in the “Literary Awards” category.

 

"Gather The Children" by Batsirai E Chigama

Batsirai E Chigama is a spoken word poet, a short story writer and a socio-political gender activist. 

Gather The Children, her first collection of poems, is 'a reflection on Zimbabwe in the last ten years; chronicling stories of displacement, loss and desperation.'

Batsirai's work has been featured in over fifteen anthologies including State of The Nation,  (Conversation Paper Press, 2009) and War Against War,  (Mensa Press,  2010).  In 2014, Batsirai came second in the Stanza Poetry Festival Digital Slam ahead of 8 other contestants chosen from all over the world.

Batsirai is passionate about providing alternative narratives to those featured in mainstream media and her work with young people, has taken her as far as Denmark, performing and facilitating creative writing and spoken word workshops in schools.

"Ndinobvunzawo Njira Inoende KwaMakasa" by Takesure Taringana

Takesure Taringana is an economic historian and a Lecturer in the Department of Economic History at the University of Zimbabwe. He obtained his BA Honours degree in Economic History and his MPhil in African Economic History in 2008 and 2015 respectively.

He has a sharp interest in agricultural commodities and development in Africa, and focuses primarily on coffee production in both colonial and post-colonial Zimbabwe. His research is also concerned with water and development, gender, language, climate change and community development.

In June 2018, Takesure published his first research monograph with Cambridge Scholars Publishing, entitled Agrarian Capitalism and the Development of the Coffee Industry in Colonial Zimbabwe 1900-1980.
