Is it time up for the Pied Piper of R&B, R Kelly?
It seesm that the push to #MuteRKelly continues as online music sites are pulling the plug on Kellz music. This comes amidst the allegations of R Kelly’s sexual misconduct cases. Last week two women came forward confirming the accusation of Kelly running a sex cult. For years 51 year old R Kelly has been accused of sexual misconduct with a number of younger women.
In 1994, Kelly, then 27, married 15 year old Aaliyah, before the marriage was annulled. In 2008, Kelly was acquitted of 14 counts of child pornography in Chicago. Since then, numerous allegations have been reported.
Apple, Spotify and Pandora have taken steps to remove Kelly’s music from their platform. Spotify announced that it would begin to refrain from promoting artists it deemed performing “hate content” or “demonstrate hateful conduct personally” on its company-curated playlists. According to Blast, Pandora’s updated “policy is to not actively promote artists with certain demonstrable behavioral, ethical or criminal issues.
The debate remains that there are many artists on the named platforms who have acts of misconduct. What these music will do after using R Kelly as an example, remains to be seen.
