A Grammy For The African Giant? – DancehallMag

It’s officially two weeks to the 63rd Annual Grammy Award, and one question is running through the minds of not only Nigerians but also fans of Burna Boy all around the world.  Will he win the Grammy for Best Global Music Album?

It is the second Grammy nomination for the Nigerian superstar.

Last year, Burna’s album African Giant was nominated for a Grammy in Best World Music Album category, which is now named the Best Global Music Album.   The name change symbolized “a departure from the connotations of colonialism, folk and ‘non-American’,” according to the Academy.

Though his fans hoped he would win, he humbly lost to the legendary Beninese-American musician, Angelique Kidjo. In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Kidjo praised Burna Boy for using his music to change the world’s perception of African music. She went further to dedicate her award to him.

While a good number of his fans were disappointed, a lot more were excited that the world had finally opened their eyes and ears to his talent. They knew another opportunity would come. And they were right.

The release of his Twice As Tall album was undoubtedly the biggest Nigerian album release of 2020. The 15-track album had a few features from some legendary artists such as Senegalese musician Youssou N’Dour, English singer-songwriter Chris Martin, American Hip-Hop trio Naughty By Nature, Kenyan Afro-pop band Sauti Sol and a few others. According to Rolling Stone magazine, it debuted at Number 54 on the Top 200 Album Chart, and it gained over 14.8 million streams its first week alone. Since its release, Twice As Tall has amassed an incredible 175 million streams from all streaming platforms. Burna Boy released what his fans termed ‘The Grammy-winning Album’.

With the massive success and recognition it gained and the powerful message it conveys, Twice As Tall being nominated was no surprise. Other nominees in this category are American-based afrobeat band Antibalas, British-Indian Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar and Taureg music group from Northern Mali Tinariwen.

Not only is he a Grammy contender, but Burna Boy has also been confirmed as one of the performers in this year’s pre-show which takes place on Sunday, March 14, at noon PT, and will be streamed live internationally via GRAMMY.com.

While he wouldn’t be the first Nigerian to take home a Grammy award, if he wins, Burna Boy will be the first solo Nigerian artist to receive the award.
