Construction of the exquisite shopping complex, the Mall of Zimbabwe complex, which will be located in the capital Harare’s up market Borrowdale suburb, will commence in the second quarter (Q2) of next year, it has been learnt.

The latest development was revealed by West Property Group CEO, Ken Sharpe.

This comes after President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week broke the ground at WestProp Group’s   other multimillion dollar project, The Hill Luxury Golf Estate, in Harare.

Speaking to Business Times, a market leader in business, financial and economic reportage, on the sidelines of ZIMREAL forum held in the capital Harare yesterday, Sharpe said: “As WestProp, we have waited a long time to arrive at this moment,” Sharpe told Business Times.

He added: “But I think as we stand today, we are ready for the Mall of Zimbabwe, a big project which we expect to start in the second quarter of next year.

“This (Mall of Zimbabwe) will complement the whole Millenium City development and Pokugara, the one we are completing next year in Q2.”

According to Sharpe, the $100m project, a joint venture between WestPro Group, McCormick Property Development Group, and the City of Harare, has received approval from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) to start construction on the Mall of Zimbabwe.

It is anticipated that the project would be the largest shopping center in the country  and the second largest in Africa.

“With EMA , we are done with the issues that had stalled the project, it’s  now just a matter of submitting  our plans and then we can start construction,” Sharpe said.

Additionally, he affirmed that work on other projects, such Millennium City and Millenium Heights, will also start next  year.

“For the Millennium City and Millenium Heights (the flats), we believe that by this time next year, block five will be off the ground and block four will be well advanced. That’s over 300 units of flats and we will be on the way to create 500 units of the total of 1000 units.

And then we will be breaking ground on the office park which will be next to the Mall of Zimbabwe,” Sharpe said.

MacCormick Property Development CEO, Jason MacCormick concurred saying:“…Certainly in the second quarter of next year. It all depends on how quickly we will get the leases signed up by tenants. We will need to design it first in consultation with the tenants before we start moving in to construct this big project.
