Jah & Winky deliver world class performances

The show had been slated for December 18, 2020 but unfortunately due to some technicalities, it was postponed. At that moment many theories made the rounds as to what the ‘real’ cause of the postponement was – some even suggested that a political hand had played a part.

But after witnessing the two acts performing live at the HICC on Saturday evening, we realised why the first attempt failed.

It was never going to be easy to unleash the force that emanates from a ninja and that from a guy with a military touch factor all at once on one stage.

Had the December gig proceeded, there would definitely have been some provoking that would lead to controversial replies.

The god’s had to delay the show, and prepare us for what we were about to expose ourselves to and we can definitely confirm that the wait was worth it!

First up on the big stage was Jah Prayzah and his third generation troops all looking dapper in their well-coordinated denim outfits.

This was the first time we were witnessing the new band in action with Jah having replaced his drummer, keyboardist, lead and bass guitarists and also hiring a new backing vocalist.

Where the changes worth it?

Yes!

For those with a love for quality musical presentations who seldom get blinded by being star struck, Jah Prayzah is the new man to listen to in town.

On Saturday, the soldier boy delivered a very different but rich musical flair to what we have seen over the past six years he has been an award-winning monster.

The musical arrangements, the well curated dances, use of props on stage and the deftly thought intro’s left us wondering is this still Jah or it was someone else.

It is clear that he has been working hard in lockdown and the results are now manifesting.

With the stage lit and left covered in class, it was now the Winky’s turn to turn-up and boy did he do wonders!

The introduction to his set was captivating and immediately got the attention of everyone in the auditorium.

The synchronization of the screens showing his videos, the band pumping out a heavy riddim and the lighting team cleverly moving the lights to the beat, majority of folks in the house could not help but to start screaming even before the Gafa had appeared on stage.

Then when he did appear, there was chaos as people rushed to the stage to get a close-up view of his gold and black ninja attire which had lighting on the chest section – with the words GAFA written on it.

As tradition, Winky started with his old school jams, firing one after the other without stopping the music meaning from the moment he stepped out on stage till about 15 minutes he did not change the tempo and all this while the crowd was just singing along in ecstasy.

On the musicality bit, this was the first time we saw the new backing vocalists in action, they sounded pretty good.

However, the band was just too much.

The combination of lead guitarist, drummer and bassist has solidified and is now giving the gafa the opportunity to easily mix genres during performances. Like on Saturday we heard a little bit of samba during his performance.
The energy exuded by the chanter was venomous and definitely got our 2021 started!

Kudos goes to the show promoter, Kayse Connect for coming up with this idea. It was a very sweet experience of the two different world’s that these two acts come from.
They both are inimitable in their own forte.

The bar has been raised now by the two acts as it is no longer just about who makes people jump the most (ku jambisa) as they say in the ghetto but they have now started to invest in quality musical presentations.

This is a very exciting development for us as this is one area many local acts are poor at when you look at their presentations whenever foreign acts perform in the country.

The gig which was also held in partnership with recently launched live streaming platform, Gateway Stream saw the company record numbers of just under 1000 viewers who had paid to watch the show from the comfort of their homes.
