The Lounge series testament that DStv’s African content agenda is bearing fruit

Over the past decade DStv has been investing a lot in Mzansi Magic Channel 161 and it has grown to be a powerhouse in creation of South African content.

The pay-tv has used the success of this channel as well as Africa Magic to rollout similar projects to other countries in Africa. This has seen the birth of Maisha Magic East and Bongo as well as Zambezi Magic.

While, content on the other channels is quite intriguing, Mzansi Magic leads the pack.

Some of its flagship shows include the likes of ‘Isibaya’ and ‘The Queen’.

By giving African content creators space, DStv has helped the likes of Ferguson Films who are behind The Queen to hone their skills and can now compete on the global stage with their recent production, ‘Kings of Jo’Burg’ causing waves on Netflix.

Over the past weeks, we came across yet another cool production on Mzansi Magic, a musical called The Lounge Series.

The show features various top South African Afro -Soul and Gospel acts who will be sharing their stories through intimate live performances in front of a studio audience.

The editions we have watched so far featured KhayaMthethwa and Pastor Benjamin Dube.

Scintillating stuff!

This got us searching for the producers of the show and we found them and had a sweet chat.

The first thing we wanted to establish was the thrust of the show and this is what they had to say about it, “We really wanted to have our viewers immerse themselves into the live performance with the feeling that they are a fly on the wall at a concert. There are few experiences as uplifting and fulfilling as experiencing an artist do what they do best and our aim was to replicate that experience for our viewers.”

The uniqueness of the show which sees no host but just the artist and the guests dialoguing and yet the tempo of the show does not fade also left us amazed.

“You’d notice that there is quite an eclectic mix of talent but what they all have in common is that they bring their A-game when they’re in front of a live crowd. That was a big determining factor as to which talent we approached. We started by asking ourselves which performers have some of the best live shows, and that influenced who we approached for the show.”

The producers also revealed that given the popularity of the debut season, there is a possibility of chapter two or many others.

Buoyant from this, would they mind franchising to other channels such as the aforementioned ones?

“There is definitely the option to franchise a show like this globally, and more specifically across Africa. This continent has such a rich tapestry of musical talent & it would be great if country by country we could replicate what we created and showcase the best of our Pan-African talent,” they shared.
