One person has died after a wall collapse at Zimplats, the platinum miner said Sunday.
A high wall at the entrance to Zimplats’ Ngwarati mine in Mhondoro-Ngezi collapsed on Sunday morning, killing a contractor, head of corporate affairs Busi Chindove said in a statement.
Workers that had been inside the mine were quickly evacuated, Zimplats reported.
CEO Alex Mhembere said: “It is indeed a difficult time for the whole Zimplats family. Our sincere condolences go to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased. The rest of the employees who were underground when the incident occurred have been safely evacuated by the Zimplats Proto Team.”
Zimplats has a good safety record. Over the last two quarters, Zimplats recorded no lost time injuries.
Ngwarati is one of Zimplats two existing mines, together with Rukodzi. Zimplats is currently on a US$264 million development project of a new mine, Mupani, while redeveloping Bimha Mine, to replace Ngwarati and Rukodzi when they are mined out.
