Wirtz equalises for Liverpool at Fulham; Brentford 3-1 up at Everton

Manchester United’s lack of cutting edge proved costly as they drew 1-1 at rivals Leeds in Sunday’s first Premier League game.

Matheus Cunha equalised for Ruben Amorim’s side just three minutes after Brenden Aaronson had put the hosts ahead at Elland Road in a game which had otherwise lacked clear-cut chances.

It is the second underwhelming draw in as many games for Ruben Amerom’s United, who were held 1-1 by bottom side Wolves in their last match.

Later, Chelsea have their first fixture since the departure of manager Enzo Maresca when they travel to Manchester City. In the Gallagher Prem, Leicester host Saracens.

Overnight, England made a strong start to the fifth Ashes Test and finished 211-3 after the day’s play ended early due to adverse weather.

Luke Littler, meanwhile, became only the fourth man to win back-to-back PDC World Championships when he beat Gian van Veen to clinch the £1m price last night.

    Goal! Newcastle 2-0 Crystal Palace

    Newcastle cement their advantage.

Malick Thiaw manages to get contact to the ball in a crowd of bodies inside the box and he prods past Dean Henderson.

    Goal! Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland

Brian Brobbey and Enzo Le Fee knock the ball between themselves before Brobbey thumps an effort past Vicario.

    Sunderland are level.

    Goal! Fulham 1-1 Liverpool

    Liverpool have an equaliser!

Take your pick of the words used to describe when someone is as marginally onside as here. Florian Wirtz is a hair’s breadth from the Fulham defender on the replay…

The goal which was initially disallowed is overturned and Liverpool’s players wheel away in celebration.

For something that sums up how tight it was, the VAR check took two and a half minutes.

    Goal! Newcastle 1-0 Crystal Palace

Newcastle finally find the breakthrough at St James’ Park.

They had a goal overturned in the first half. There’s no doubt about this one.

A free kick is cleared and sent back into the box by Harvey Barnes. It’s then knocked into a good area and Bruno Guimaraes turns it home.

    Goal! Everton 1-3 Brentford

A comeback from here is, well, unlikely to say the least.

But Everton have managed to reduce the deficit. Jack Grealish swings a lovely delivery into the box and Beto sends a glancing header inside the far post.

    Crossbar denies Liverpool an equaliser

    Fulham 0-1 Liverpool

So, so close to a leveller from Liverpool.

Dominik Szoboszlai swings in a corner which is met by Alexis Mac Allister on the edge of the six-yard box.

He sends a header towards goal but it bounces off the crossbar.

    Goal! Everton 0-3 Brentford

    Another!

From bad to worse very quickly for Everton.

Brentford knock the ball about in the hosts’ half and move the ball up the pitch quickly.

Kevin Schade lays it off to Igor Thiago who dinks it over Jordan Pickford.

    Goal! Everton 0-2 Brentford

It seemed like Everton only had a slim chance of turning this around. It’s now even harder.

Brentford swing a corner into the six-yard box and Nathan Collins leaps the highest to head it past Jordan Pickford.

The crowded area meant Pickford could not get off his line. Everton’s defence weren’t switched on enough to clear the ball before it reached Collins.

‘Amorim keen to let everyone know who is really in charge’

    Reporting from Elland Road:

Amorim’s claim that he is the “manager” of Manchester United is interesting given he was in fact brought in to be the opposite, with the club keen to point out the rookie Portuguese coach was United’s first head coach. One who would fit well into the new Ineos-led hierarchy.

That makes these comments all the more pointed. The i Paper understands there have been talks between Amorim and director of football Jason Wilcox this week. Nothing out of the ordinary, just over the direction of the club.

There have been doubts among those in the setup over Amorim’s system for some time. Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada had been keen to see the besieged boss move on from his 3-4-3 formation, given how unsuccessful it has been so far.

Amorim refused to budge at Elland Road. Now he is keen to let everyone know who is really in charge.

    Half time: Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

A lot of work left for Liverpool to do in this one.

They did not manage to have a shot on target in the first half.

An excellent strike from Harry Wilson, initially ruled out before the goal stood after a VAR check, gives Fulham the lead at half time.

‘I came to be the manager, not the coach’ – Amorim

    Reporting from Elland Road:

Ruben Amorim appeared to aim another dig at Manchester United’s hierarchy following his side’s 1-1 draw at Leeds.

Amorim was in a feisty mood in Friday’s pre-match press conference, where he refused to clarify previous comments on needing more investment in the squad to make his 3-4-3 system work.

An improved performance at Elland Road – Matheus Cunha’s fine finish earning the visitors a deserved point – did little to change Amorim’s downbeat demeanour, as he again reacted angrily to questions over his role at the club.

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United,” Amorim snapped. “And that is clear. I know that my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, it’s not [Antonio] Conte, it’s not [Jose] Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United. And it’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change. That was my point. I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.

“I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. I was really clear on that and that is going to finish in 18 months and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal. That is my job. Not to be a coach. If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything we need to change the club.

“I came here to be the manager, not to be the coach. In every department – the scouting department, the sporting director needs to do their job, I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.”

    Half time: Everton 0-1 Brentford

Everton have left a lot to be desired in the first half.

Just before the break, they nearly find a way to level things up as Jack Grealish whips a low ball into the box and Caoimhin Kelleher has to produce a quick stop to deny a diving header.

There are some boos at Hill Dickinson Stadium as the players go off.

Half time: Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace

Newcastle have created many opportunities in this first half and Anthony Gordon had a goal disallowed by VAR, but they enter half time with the deadlock still unbroken.

Crystal Palace have managed to keep them at bay – just.

    Half time: Tottenham 1-0 Sunderland

Ben Davies’ goal proves the difference as Tottenham enter the break in front.

    Goal! Fulham 1-0 Liverpool

It was initially ruled out but, after a VAR check, the home supporters are jubilant as Harry Wilson has put them ahead against Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk was clearly keeping him onside after seeing the replay. The former Liverpool man charges through their third and drills in a low effort.

Liverpool have not won this season when they concede the first goal. Is another disappointing visit to Craven Cottage on the cards?

    Goal! Tottenham 1-0 Sunderland

Ben Davies, making his first start of the season, breaks the deadlock.

Cristian Romero finds Micky van de Ven in the area and his shot is diverted towards goal at close range by Davies.

    Newcastle have goal disallowed

Anthony Gordon thinks he has found the opener at St James’ Park, but it is ruled out for offside after a VAR check.

A long pass finds Yoane Wissa, who bursts towards the box before laying off Gordon.

It’s a simple finish for Gordon, tapping past the goalkeeper from close range. He runs off to celebrate but the officials soon have their say, ruling it out because Wissa was narrowly offside in the build-up.

    Goal! Everton 0-1 Brentford

Igor Thiago has found his first goal in six games, putting Brentford ahead at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton are under at the break and James Tarkowski gives the ball away as they try to play it out.

Brentford counter, getting the ball down the wing before threading a pass in towards Thiago, who only needs the slightest touch to turn it past Jordan Pickford.

Bangladesh refuse to travel to India for World Cup

In cricket news, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) say they will not travel to India for next month’s T20 World Cup “under current conditions”.

Bangladesh are in Group C, the same as England, alongside the West Indies, Nepal and Italy.

Sri Lanka are co-hosting the tournament, with all of Pakistan’s matches being played there due to tensions with India.

The BCB have “formally requested” that the International Cricket Council (ICC) moves all of Bangladesh’s matches.

They said: “”Following a thorough assessment of the prevailing situation and the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India… the board of directors resolved that the national team will not travel to India for the tournament under the current conditions.”
