AI regulatory framework on the cards

TENDAIISHE NYAMUKUNDA

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) has partnered the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services to come up with a regulatory framework  on artificial intelligence (AI)  to govern its use by journalists , education institutes , individuals and other players in various sectors in the country.

The initial report was launched yesterday  in the capital Harare.

AI has rapidly become a constant in most people’s lives through its application in commerce, education, health, public service delivery, communications, governance, agriculture and manufacturing.

However, the majority of Southern African nations lack a comprehensive legislative framework that would encourage ethical AI, control AI-driven business models, or successfully encourage the production and collection of high-quality African data.

MISA’s regional director, Tabani Moyo, stated that the organization is dedicated to implementing practices, rules, and other measures pertaining to Al commerce.

“As MISA, we are happy to remain a resource to the Ministry (of ICT) and to the Parliament as we walk through the process of instituting policies, practice and other mechanisms related to AI in the communication ecosystem in Zimbabwe,” Moyo said.

He added: “We are at your service Minister  (Dr Tatenda Mavetera) and we are very happy you have extended this open cheque.”
