Ambassador Omar Zniber, the president of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), has expressed disquiet over the challenges the UN is facing amid global divisions.
He spoke to female journalists from Sub-Saharan Africa who were in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of a UN study tour.
Ambassador Zniber pointed out that some nations have disregarded UN advice as a result of ongoing conflicts worldwide.
“We are crossing some difficult times because the Council is also impacted by the divergences existing between those who have opinions on how to work,” Ambassador Zniber said.
“Some are not accepting that the Council put fingers on some situations in some countries, saying that there is an exaggeration, that there is a kind of preemption on that.
“Others are focussing more on the fact that everyone should bear its responsibilities when it comes to the question of accountability.”
Ambassador Zniber highlighted how Africa’s human rights, particularly children , are impacted by the digital gap.
He said this discrepancy hinders access to education, information, and job opportunities.
“We are experiencing an unfortunate digital divide in our continent, in Africa.
“A lot of people do not even have devices,” Ambassador Zniber said.
He added:“So, without these devices, without the new technologies, we do not have access to education, we do not have correct access to the information, even we do not have access to the job market.
So, it is becoming a serious issue.”
